WORDS TODAY, HAVE MORE MEANINGS THAN THEY DID YEARS AGO
Back in 1949,...
MEMORY
was something you lost
with old age,
and nothing else.
A PROGRAMME
was a TV show.
An APPLICATION
was for employment.
A KEYBOARD
was a piano.
A CURSOR
used profanity.
A MOUSE
was a scarry little creature,
sometimes appearing in your house,
making it necessary to set
mouse traps with cheese,
and cats chased them.
A MOUSE PAD
was where the mouse lived.
A WEB
was a trap for flies,
spun by spiders.
A HARD DRIVE
was a long journey
in your car.
A CRASH
was when two vehicles
collided on the road.
A VIRUS
was the flu.
A THREE AND A HALF INCH FLOPPY was....
well now,
was maybe a little embarrassing for a man!!!???
HARDWARE
was found in a hardware shop,
and there was no such word
as SOFTWARE.
CHIP
was sliced up potato, fried.
COKE
was a soft drink.
POT
was a utensil used for cooking.
GRASS
was the green stuff growing in your lawn,
which had to be mown.
AIDS
were people that helped.
ROCK MUSIC
was a rocking lullaby.
SOAPS
were used to wash with,
but today they are called
'Coronation Street', Eastenders',
'Emmerdale' and 'Neighbours'.
(programmes shown many
times a week, on TV.)
TIME SHARING
meant spending time with your
family and friends.
Today it can mean,
purchasing a week (or 2)
of a holiday flatlet,
and getting burdenned with
maintenance costs whether
you use it or not!!
COFFEE
was not yet instant granules.
It was made from a bottle
of liquid 'Camp'.
TYPEWRITERS
were only manually operated.
MOBILE PHONES
had not been invented.
Who would have thought then,
that almost everyone would be
walking around with a phone
'stuck' to their ear, by the year 2000!!??
When I was a teenager,
we had to go to the
red telephone box
to phone a friend.
A few old pennies would buy
a lot of talk time then.
Put the pennies in the slot,
when the call was connected,
press button A,
so that the money dropped
into the paybox.
But if there was no reply,
press button B
to get your money back.
People always got married
BEFORE living together.
Every family had a father
AND a mother.
Houses could be purchased for
under a thousand pounds.
I can remember buying a
brand new house in either
1970 or 1971 for just over £3000.
There was no internet or
computer dating.
Young ladies were taken out
in the young gent's car,
to go to the 'pictures'
(now more commonly called 'cinema'),
or to a dance.
When I was in my mid teens,
I lived in the country on a farm,
and going to a dance
was the highlight of the week!!
And I also met my first boyfriend at one,
as dances were a likely place
to meet up with new people.
Youngsters were brought up to
attend Church or Chapel,
another likely meeting place.
TELEVISION
was only broadcast for
a few hours a day.
There were no tumble dryers.
When my first daughter
was born in 1970,
I was given a spin dryer,
as those were the days when baby's
bottom was covered by a
real terry towelling nappie.
There was plenty of washing...
done by hand before the
first twin tubs became popular.
Talking of nappies...
there were no disposable nappies
as we know them now.
In 1970, if travelling,
I occasionally used what
was a disposable nappy then....
a pad tucked inside plastic pants.
TAPE RECORDERS
were big reel to reels. Remember??
No C D's or cassette tape decks.
There were no fast food places
such as McDonalds, Pizza Hut
and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
McDonalds Corporation was
founded in 1955.
There were no bar codes
on goods purchased, until 1973
